Preface
This redbook is directed to customers who need to install and do the initial implementation of SAP R/3 on DB2 for OS/390, with SAP R/3 Release 4.0B. The initial implementation uses the AIX platform for SAP R/3 application servers and the OS/390 platform for the SAP R/3 database server. The redbook presents practical examples to demonstrate the installation, database setup, and operational aspects of SAP R/3 on DB2 for OS/390. The redbook helps system programmers, database administrators, and SAP basis consultants to understand the implementation of SAP R/3 on DB2 for OS/390.
This second edition of the redbook addresses the new releases of OS/390, SAP R/3, and associated software. It also discusses Windows NT application servers. Additionally, the redbook incorporates experience gained since the first edition was published; it includes suggested revisions.
Knowledge of SAP R/3, AIX, ESCON hardware, OS/390, OpenEdition, and DB2 is assumed.

This redbook was produced by a team of specialists from around the world working at the International Technical Support Organization Poughkeepsie Center.
Jan Baisden is a Senior Market Support Representative at the International Technical Support Organization, Poughkeepsie Center. He concentrates in ERP Solutions and particularly in AIX support of S/390 uses in those solutions. Before joining the ITSO 5 years ago, Jan worked in the International Systems Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland, supporting projects in Latin America and Asia.
Harald Flo is an Advisory I/T Specialist for the Norwegian IBM SAP Service line. He has three years of experience in R/3 Basis administration, and has more than 10 years experience as an MVS system programmer. His areas of expertise include OS/390, OpenEdition, TCP/IP and SAP R/3.
Chris Wagner is an SAP Basis Administrator, working for IBM Global Services-North in the SAP Technology Deployment Department. He has been involved with SAP for 3 years, is certified as an SAP R/3 Technical Consultant, and has installed and maintained an R/3 with DB2 for OS/390 system. He has 13 years total experience in the IT field and joined IBM in October of 1997.
